Longpath Thinking

Planning needs to be long term, not just for the next election cycle. 3 to 5 years is not long enough planning for the environment or our finances.
There was a time when City Leaders made 50 and 75 year plans. They wanted to make sure the community was there for their grandchildren and beyond. 

The Native Americans have what they call, "Seven Generation Thinking". When you make a decision you make it so it will be a good one for the next seven generations. We see this in their reverence for nature and building LEED Certified buildings.

Notre Dame has a "100 Year Plan". They have made huge strides in sustainability going from coal to sustainable energy and having LEED Silver and above buildings. Fortunately for us here in South Bend they have found ways to reduce water consumption and keep enormous amounts of trash out of our local landfills.

I see numerous things the City could be doing to be more Sustainable. I have brought these ideas up at Park Board meetings, with the SB Sustainabilty Department and I regularly post in the "Green News" group on Facebook.

As a trained Master Gardener, I have supported Unity Gardens in their education efforts with the Facebook Group "Michiana Yardeners". I document the local Garden Walks on my website SuesSecretGarden.com.  

We are borrowing this earth from future generations and we need to do better. "Think Global. Act Local" is a philosophy I put into practice.

On Council I want to push for a better environment. I also think those receiving our tax dollars need to be required to build responsibly for our future with eco-friendly buildings and landscaping .
